Welcome to the Rock Puppies projects page! Junior members of the Wichita Gem and Mineral Society participate in lots of fun activities and field trips. Sometimes at the monthly club meetings, juniors make rock-related craft projects with the help of adult members in the club. They have made fancy rings, rock slab wind chimes, wire-wrapped pendants, and much more. Once a year at an adult club member's house, there are classes that all the members can participate in. Juniors love taking classes in silver-smithing, beading, cabbing, wire-wrapping, rock identification, and more.
Adult club members help organize field trips for juniors to go hunting for rock specimens. The Rock Puppies have been to the Salt Plains in Oklahoma for selenite crystals and locations around Kansas to collect geodes, slate, fossils, and more. Juniors have also visited various museums on both junior field trips and club field trips. Every year at the Lawn and Garden show, the Wichita Gem and Mineral Society sets up a booth to give away information about the show in April and to demonstrate how to do different lapidary arts like cabbing, sphering, and tumbling. Juniors always enjoy helping at the booth giving away coupons to the gem show. They also like helping at the gem show in April. You can find more information about that on the "Showtime" page.
If you join the Wichita Gem and Mineral club, you can participate in these fun field trips and projects as well! If you want to do projects on your own, there are some lapidary projects you can do at home without an adult. Click on the "Fun Pages" link above for some awesome crafts!
