The Wichita Gem and Mineral Society junior members love helping at the annual show! They help with the Gem Wheel, Junior Rock Pile, Grab Bags, Gem Hunt, and the rock identification program for schools and scouts. Most juniors set up display cases, showing off their favorite rocks, minerals, and fossils.
One aspect of the Wichita Gem and Mineral show that sets it apart from many other shows is that it has special programs designed for students. On Friday, scouts and school students can attend the show free and participate in special programs designed just for them. There is a rock identification program as well as games, puzzles, and scavenger hunts.
Students are welcome to come and explore with their parents on Saturday and Sunday, too. There is a "Touch and Feel" table with big rock and fossil specimens. There are seminars that students and parents both can enjoy. One favorite table is the gem wheel where students pay to spin the wheel and collect the rocks where the spinner lands. There are grab bags for sale and students always love digging through the rock pile to find the best rocks to take home.
